Lily Allen: Not Smiling So Much Anymore

The insane pressure that the media places on young girls seems to be getting to one UK pop sensation, Lily Allen. Notorious for her bashing of other celebrities, Lily appears to be unable to take criticism very well, especially when it concerns her appearance. She recently posted a very distressing blog on her Myspace entitled “fat, ugly, and shitter than windehouse.” The short blog said:

“that is all i am , im on my own in america again . I used to pride myself on being strong minded and not being some stupid girl obsessed with the way I look . I felt like it didnt matter if I was a bit chubby cause , im not a model , I’m a singer . Im afraid I am not strong and have fallen victim to the evil machine . I write to you in a sea of tears from my hotel bed in Seattle , I have spent the past hour researching gastric bypass surgery , and laser lipo suction.”

She posted another blog today, explaining her previous statement and blaming her morose attitudes on “reading cheryl tweedys comments branding [her] a “chick with a dick” and “seeing [her] picture in so many newspapers next to kate moss.’” She says being compared to Kate Moss made her feel “grotesque.” She goes on to bash Cheryl Tweedy as retaliation, calling her a “stupid bitch.” This whole episode really showcases how the media puts TREMENDOUS pressure on celebrities, especially young women, to look thin and fabulous. One article in USA today documented how very thin models can warp a girls’ body image. The article described the startling statistics of most runway models:

“Most runway models are 14 to 19, with an average age of 16 or 17, she says. Some are older. Many are 5-foot-10 or 5-foot-11. They average 120 to 124 pounds. They wear a size 2 or 4. “If we get a girl who is bigger than a 4, she is not going to fit the clothes,” Cutrone says. “Clothes look better on thin people. The fabric hangs better.” This is a statement coming from one of the fashion industry’s top publicists. No wonder girls feel so bad about their bodies!

This image of the super-waif is no longer restricted to just models; some of the most overexposed celebrities are extremely thin, like Paris Hilton or Nicole Richie. These are the images plastered on every cover of every magazine. Yet we almost never see the toll that it takes on such young girls, at least not until it is too late. While her blog is deeply disturbing, at least it can show adolescent girls out there that they are not the only ones dealing with issues of body image. And hopefully, Lily can learn to resolve some of her issues without resorting to name-calling.

  1. Thanks for your comment!
I really like that you posted images of Kate Moss. It’s weird that Allen has been part of a campaign that rejects Kate Moss and her body type so much yet it is Kate Moss’ body and comparing herself to it that put Allen in this state. While we should be working towards seeing Kate Moss’ body as unhealthy, it seems that we only reject it because we feel we should, not because we actually do.

  2. As I opened my wardrobe today it occured to me that fashion models are like those thin metallic hangers I get from the dry cleaner, except that the models have legs !! I wouldn’t say that to anyone though …

  3. You bitches! EAT SOMTHING!!!

  4. I think its ridiculous that lily allen should feel bad seeing herself next to kate moss when personally i think lily allen is much prettier. Girls these days are just NOT eating enough or wishing they looked like super skinny anorexic celebs when they should just be happy the way they look.

  5. not all girls have to be skinny to make cloths fit and look good ,im not a size 2-4 so if i was a model and wasnt that exact size i couldnt be a model thats total bull crap.the can shuve that saying were the sun dont shine!!!

  6. Alot of women fall under the pressure to be thin. We look at these modles and truely believe that ‘thin is beautiful’. Anorexia is a disease that takes control over the brain and destroys the body.

On the other hand, some people are naturally slim and get falsly branded as bullemics or annorexic. I currently wear a size 4 and have no end of people telling me that i should eat more and not be put under pressure by these supermodles. I’m not honestly!! Other people are just bitter that i am slim and they are seen as ‘average sized’ and call me ’skinny bitch’ or whatever. To be honest I would kill to look like some of them. But I can’t help the bpody i was born into.

  7. Your All Tooo Skinny We Shud Be Loved For Who We Want To Be Not What We Have To Be.

  8. No matter what you looklily lily don’t be put off by bad comments or comments about your figure .You are in fact okay I give you praise towards your writting of music.I will of course follow you now,Peopple who I work with started to sing your songs,i thought great something new at last. I love you album and you as well.

  9. sorry I made a mistake. In my last mail to your site.
No matter what you look like Lily, don’t be put off by poor comments. Or comment about your figure or the clothes that you wear. You have charm, and I praise you in the way you have taken the Uk by storm with you album and your music writting skills. After hearing my freind in the ICT department signing one of your songs, I couldn’t believge what I was hearing, something new at last. I itend to follow your progress as you develop your music, I love your album and you as well.

  10. ı really hate when ı see models liike a can box, like a dead skin covered on their skeloton, its very nasty.I dont think clothes look better on thin people.Im not fat but ım not so thin and ı never wanna be…

  11. I agree with Sophie. I am naturally very skinny. I live in England, and I am a size 8-10 english size (I think That’s an American 6-8 or something :S) And lots of girls at school call me Annorexic and insult me about it. I have to admit that I don’t like being too skinny, I’f I breath in you can my Ribs and I hate that. I eat loads but I do eat healthily, things such as Tuns of Fruit and salad and I’m not keen on chocolate and really fatty foods, but I do eat things that are fattening, so everyone who calls me “Skinny Bitch” And such, really have no right to do so. But Back to the Modeling Subject. I think that starving yourself to look that horrible is stupid and very, very bad and it must be stopped. But I do feel it is a bit unfair for people like myself because we can’t help being like that. A few years ago before people realised how bad it was, it was seen as ‘cool’ to be tall, blonde and skinny, all of which I am. But now Brunette is apparently ‘in’ and being skinny is bad. So I really don’t think It’s fair on my behalf, But I’d rather than than people starving themselves to death to ‘look skinny’. I think it’s horrible that someone as beautiful and talented as Lily is being put down because she doesn’t look like a skeleton. Lily is way more pretty than all those horrible models. She is really inpirational to me, and many others, for a number a reasons. 1) She’s really pretty. 2) She dares to stand out 3) She has a fringe (As do I) And many people say fringes are not ‘cool’ 4) She’s a perfect weight.

Lily, Don’t listen to them. They’re just jealous of how amazing and talented you are. Don’t go down the same road as Avril Lavigne and give in to what ‘they’ want you to be.

  12. The first time I saw a picture of Lily Allen, I thought WOW’ she’s pretty. I like most of the songs she written, but most importantly I like her, because she’s unique strong minded, very silly sometimes, I the type of person, you don’t see too often.. No mater how much she does, or how much people say unkind words about her, SHE STAY”S THE SAME basically, a very sweet girl!

  13. Lily Allen read a comment about herself, stating, fat, ugly, and shittier than Amy Winehouse, It would make anyone feel bad, but at least, she removed it from her blog, right away, and moved on. If anybody makes fun of her for having a weak moment, there just an idiot. Lily Allen is smart, pretty, talented, and most of all human. Most celebrities, are to insecure, to admit they have problems, but not her.
